Chapter Ten

By the next morning, Sophie still could not figure out what had happened the night before to stop David from kissing her, and more frustratingly, how he’d curled her toes more with anticipation just by an almost kiss than any other real kiss had in her life.

David had wanted to kiss her last night. Touching her face like he did. His expression full of expectation. So why hadn’t he? He acted interested. Flirting, rubbing her feet, making her dance with him.

Or maybe it was the same old thing: a guy thinking she’s hot and dating her for the chance to make out. But maybe David was too much of a gentleman to kiss her if he didn’t mean it.

She wished he had anyway. Even if he didn’t mean it.

And she dug that he thought enough about her feelings to not do it.

And she wanted to yell and hit things and eat a lot of ice cream.

So instead of pounding her pillow, she plodded downstairs and raided the freezer. Luckily for her, Ally kept it pretty well stocked with the good stuff—Ben and Jerry’s. Sophie had downed most of the carton of Cheesecake Brownie when Ally walked in.

She froze halfway to the kitchen, shock plain on her face. “What are you doing?”

Sophie scowled. “Eating ice cream. What does it look like?”

“What happened last night?” Ally dropped her purse and sat on one of the metal barstools at the counter that separated the kitchen and living room.

Sophie’s scowl deepened, and she glared at the half-gone ice cream. At this rate she’d have to replenish the stock soon. “David was this close”—she held up two fingers less than an inch apart—“and didn’t kiss me. Nothing. Gawked at me all hot and bothered for a few minutes and then told me I needed to get back to the party. This. Close.” She walked across the kitchen and leaned over so her lips were inches from Ally’s face. “Is there something wrong with them?”

“Well, they are covered in ice cream right now. Maybe you should’ve done that last night. He wouldn’t have been able to resist licking a couple bites of Ben and Jerry’s off.”

“Ha ha. So funny.” Sophie straightened, scraped out a few more bites and devoured them, all while Ally watched in wonder.

“How is it that you don’t get ice cream headaches?” Ally asked.

“It’s a gift.”

The doorbell rang. With one final shake of her head, Ally hurried to answer the door. Sophie finished off the ice cream. “Ugh. I just ate an entire pint of ice cream.” Extra miles on the treadmill tonight for sure.

“Does that mean you’re too full for dinner?” David’s voice asked from the front door.

Gaping, Sophie looked up. Gathering her wits, she dumped the ice cream carton in the trash and licked off the spoon before tossing it toward the sink—and missing. It clattered to the floor.

“Nice.” David raised his eyebrows as he entered the kitchen. Then they jumped farther up before he smoothed out his expression.

The fact
